Where real-world differences show up

Impact toughness: scaffolding sees hammer blows on wedge heads and cold-weather service. S355J0 or J2 subgrades carry guaranteed Charpy values; a bare 'Q355' or 'S355' with no subgrade guarantees none. Specify the subgrade for cold-climate fleets.

Downgrading risk: the documented failure mode in low-cost scaffolding is Q235/S235-class tube (235 MPa yield — a third less strength) supplied against a 355-grade quote. It is invisible to the eye and catastrophic under load. The countermeasure is procedural: MTC per heat number, tube stenciling cross-checked against the MTC, and periodic third-party tensile verification on samples.
