Why OEM ladder RFQs stall
Rolling ladders look simple but hide a dozen spec decisions, and every unstated one forces the factory to either guess (dangerous) or ask (slow). Brands running private-label programs get the fastest, most comparable quotes by sending a complete spec pack — ideally a CAD file or reference drawing plus the checklist below — to every candidate factory simultaneously.
The 12-point spec checklist
Geometry (1-4): platform height or step count; climbing angle within the OSHA 50-70° envelope (steeper = smaller footprint, 58-59° is the common US compromise); step type — serrated for general warehouse, perforated for washdown visibility, grip-strut for oil exposure; top step depth (deeper platforms of 14-28 inches change frame geometry and price).
Performance (5-7): duty rating — 350 lbs is the ANSI A14.7 US convention, specify higher for special duty; locking mechanism — spring-loaded casters (retract under load) or lock-step pedal (positive lock, preferred in some fleets); handrail configuration on climbing section and platform, including removable-rail options for pallet-side loading.
Materials & finish (8-9): tube OD and wall (commonly 25-32 mm / 1-1.25 in, 1.5-2.0 mm wall), step sheet gauge, and finish — powder coat (specify RAL or brand color; safety yellow dominates) or hot-dip galvanized for corrosive environments.
Commercial (10-12): compliance standard with the documentation you need (ANSI A14.7 test report, FAI, label artwork per ANSI Z535); packaging — fully welded ships fast but eats container space, knock-down doubles or triples units per 40'HC at the cost of end-user assembly; annual volume, release sizes, and target FOB port.
